Electricity contract types
| Fixed price | – Fixed-term or open-ended term. – The customer pays the same fixed price for electricity throughout the contract period. – The most common contract in Finland. – There is no incentive for consumption flexibility because the consumer does not receive a direct economic benefit. – Prices: 7–9 cents/kWh (2025). – Time or seasonal pricing is possible. Cheaper at night, during the day, and in the summer. More expensive in the winter. |
| Exchange electricity (Spot) | –The price of electricity varies hourly according to the prices on the electricity exchange. – Rewards consumers directly for scheduling their electricity use to favorable times. – Price changes hourly, and the prices for the following day are published the previous afternoon. –Also includes the company's margin, which is on average 0.5 cents/kwh. – 31 percent of electricity contracts in Finland (2023). – In the long term, the cheapest option, if consumption can be scheduled for nighttime. |
| Hybrid | – Combines elements of an exchange-traded electricity contract and a fixed price. –The consumer benefits from the timing, but the monthly average price of exchange-traded electricity is fixed. –Allows for moderate savings by being flexible. –The final price cannot be known until the month ends and the billing period changes. –A hybrid contract can be assigned for the winter season only. |
| Night-time electricity | – Night electricity, or time-based electricity. The price of electricity is different at night and during the day. – Electricity is cheaper at night than during the day. – Time-based electricity encourages consumers to shift consumption to cheaper times. – Does not require consumers to constantly monitor market prices. |
| Seasonal | –An electricity contract that adapts to the seasons. – Two price seasons: winter and summer. – Fixed prices during the winter season and otherwise follow the exchange-based electricity contract. – More expensive than a traditional fixed-price contract during the winter season. |
