Energy intensive appliances

Using sauna stoves, electric ovens, underfloor heating in bathrooms, and charging electric vehicles (EVs) are among the largest sources of energy consumption in households. Their high electricity consumption is due to their specific functions, and reducing it is difficult without compromising their utility. However, electricity costs can be reduced by focusing on the timing of uses.

Comfort heating

  • In district-heated homes, underfloor heating in bathrooms typically has a power of 1–2 kWh.
  • If kept on continuously, it costs about 10–50 euros per month.

Saunan kiuas

  • Sauna stoves typically have a consumption of 5–8 kWh.
  • Using the sauna 1–2 times a week costs about 10–20 euros per month

Electric vehicle

  • Charging an electric vehicle with 10–15 kWh consumption provides a range of about 50–75 kilometres, which matches the average daily driving distance of a new car.
  • With a standard 8-amp home outlet, the maximum charging rate is about 1.8 kWh. Over 5–8 hours, this is enough for average daily use.
  • With an 11 kW (3x16A) charger, charging can be scheduled to align with the cheapest electricity prices within the weekly cycle.

Electric oven

  • Electric ovens use 1–2 kWh to heat up to 200°C for one hour.
  • Using recirculation can save up to 15-20 percent.

Efficiency measures

Optimize usage and shorten usage time – By monitoring the price of electricity, you can schedule the use of major appliances to cheaper hours.
– Heating the sauna when the price of electricity is low.
– Charging electric vehicles during the night, when the load on the grid is lower.
– The electric oven can be used more efficiently, by cooking several dishes at once and utilizing the oven's circulation feature.
Lowering temperatures and using alternative devices– Electricity consumption can be reduced by lowering the temperature of ovens and saunas if possible.
– Electricity consumption can also be reduced by using the microwave to reheat food instead of the oven.
– Using an Air Fryer consumes less electricity than using a conventional oven.
– Convection ovens reduce consumption by 10-15% compared to traditional ovens.
Underfloor heating in the bathroom– The comfort heating in bathrooms should be turned off during the day to save electricity.
– Heating should be scheduled for early mornings and evenings when showers are typically used, and when the electricity prices are at their lowest.
Utilizing heat from electric devices– In electrically heated homes, the heat from saunas and ovens can temporarily reduce heating needs.
– However, right timing is still beneficial even in these cases.
